Post Tree Felling - Douglas Fir - Western Red Cedar - European Larch

A 117ft [35.5m] Douglas Fir [pd 1959] was felled in preparation for making a new timber drying / bodgers shed.

Image

The butt revealed squirrel bark stripping damage done early in the life of this 67 year old tree with the full extent of this currently unknown.

Image

The tree got hung up between twin upper stems of a western red cedar and it took a lot of effort to eventually manage free this tree when one of the WRC stems broke allowing the DF tree to fall.

Image

A good straight clean DF log was obtained with minimal branches on the lower 60 ft length.
In due course the WRC will be felled to create shingle stock from the lower single stem.

Image

The log will be bucked to length, extracted and converted on our sawmill. This will require an enforced wait period to allow the ground to dry out and firm up following a very wet January.

Seems that the Gruffallo was watching our efforts to take down big Dougie !

A large 16' log was inserted under the base of the hung up log butt and pivoted over the stump to form a fulcrum for the 16' log to be used as a lever to lift and wiggle the stem which in combination with sideways pull from the come-a-long eventually caused the log to crash to the ground tearing off one of the Western Red Cedar twin stems.

The felled big Douglas Fir was snedded (branches removed)

Image

and then the damaged Western Red Cedar tree was felled.

Image

Some typical WRC butt rot was observed

Image

and the broken twin stem crotch that had held up the big Douglas Fir was more clearly witnessed.

A nice straight 80ft European larch tree was felled.

The butt log will be used to make components for the alternating stair.

We now need to fell another European larch tree of similar quality and larger dimensions to make the parts for the ground floor sill frame needed for the new Bodgers / Timber Drying shed.

We felled a neighbouring larch tree and were taken aback that this measured up at 140ft tall once on the ground !

Image

Needless to say it got hung up on an oak tree and required 2 winches to pull it down.

Image

A recently planted oak shelter got slightly bent but not damaged.

The 141ft European Larch tree was bucked to length and extracted to the cruck barn employing 3GP (girl power muscle), hand winches, round fence post rollers & levers plus good team working.

Image

The logs will be converted to form 2 long sills (17' x 8" x 8") + 3 cross sills (12' x 8" x 8") for the new bodgers / timber drying shed.

Image

Log#1 will likely be able to produce good knot free boards from the outer part of the log that can be used to make the treads for the alternating stair to be installed in the cruck barn.

The 17ft butt log from the 80ft European Larch tree felled will be used to make the alternating stair stringers and hand rails.
