After cutting a Douglas Fir 9ft butt log "thru and thru" it was decided that it would be a shame to reduce this pair of matched heart boards any further simply for use in making weather boards for the cruck barn and so these were put in stick awaiting a better use - (ideas / offers ?)

In summer 2023 The Oxfordshire Woodland Group decided to embark on making a set of Shaker meeting house furniture items including matching long benches and a high backed bench seat.

Persons interested in participating should contact the Trustees. Bodgers and pole lathe turners are particularly welcome.

The Oxfordshire Woodland Group selected 4 off x 1.5" thick top quality Douglas fir planks that were converted and put in stick in Nov 2018 for Cora Firth to make the Shaker benches and a high back seat.

These Douglas fir planks were sawn thru & thru from the same virtually knot free log in a manner that is typically found in original Shaker furniture.

Seat surfaces should ideally have minimal knots as these will tend to exude sticky resin.

The DF planks are now in Cora Firth's furniture workshop where they have been put through a thicknesser / planner. This collectively removed 3mm of wood from the top and underside faces.

This process has resulted in a higher contrast between knots and wood with the knotty mirror side now being relegated to be used as the underside of the benches.
