Now that the 2013-14 hedge laying season is finished a small number of hazel binders that were left over have been cut down to 8ft lengths to form bean poles.

It is important to derive the maximum benefit from work done coppicing and carrying and the old adage of "the only thing free on a tree is the rustle of the leaves" springs to mind.

It's a year on from this post, so we're in the middle of the 2015 season.
What are folk charging for beanpoles in and around Oxford? Over here in Gloucestershire I'm charging 85p a pole. Others around are charging a pound and I'll probably put my price up next year.
Underpricing, particularly by conservation organisations and part-time workers (who will sometimes say ' I'm only doing it for beer money') is a real problem for coppice workers trying to earn a living.
Brian.

Hi Brian,

I just checked and found that last year that I charged for bean poles based on size :-

8ft - £1.00 each
7ft - £0.80 each

with all bean poles varying in diameter between 0.75 - 1.5ins at base.

For the past two years all poles 1.5 - 2+ ins diameter and over have all gone to serve as hedge laying stakes.

It's the 2025 bean pole and pea stick cutting season. The pea sticks are made from the tops of the bean poles.

Bean poles are sold in lots of 10 x 8ft poles + 1 x 10ft ridge pole plus bundle of pea sticks for £30.
