Here is a pic of some revetment work we have done using pre-planted coir rolls and treated softwood boards.

In future we would prefer to use locally sourced timber. I was thinking sweet chestnut posts and elm or oak boards. If anyone can help source these or suggest an alternative please let me know on the forum or send me a PM.

Hi Kav,

You could use alder posts and boards providing these remain wet. Alder piles were used to build supports for crannog dwellings that were built on the sides of Scottish Lochs. Some of these piles still survive today even though they are now thousands of years old. See :-

Thanks, hopefully we will be doing some more near the end of the summer so will look at getting some Alder sorted nearer the time. I did find a source of elm but the cost/amounts needed sadly didn't work out.

Looks good - as a river restoration person I'm interested to know the scenario of the bank repair? Other options include using brushwood to help trap silt and create bank protection at the toe or dead wood in the channel that can prevent erosion and also act as habitat.

You can use living material to reinforce the bank too http://salixrw.com/product/live-willow-revetments (not recommending firm but as example)

http://www.therrc.co.uk/pdf/manual/MAN_4_2C.pdf for technical example

We built to client/EA spec.

The revetment was on a footpath where the bank had collapsed and took some of the surface away too, and because it was a main river we had to wait most of the winter for the water levels to drop!

Thanks for the other info, always interested in other solutions.
