We have recently experienced knawing damage being done to the edges of some timbers that have been stacked outside in the woodland under cover.

This could be squirrel, rat or glis glis damage ? (a gg was recently caught in a rat trap).

Image

We suspect that this damage was done by glis glis as these critters have only recently managed to migrate to S. Oxon. This rodent is a non native species and hibernates over winter. Possibly their teeth continue to grow during hibernation and need to be reduced following emergence in late spring / summer ?

Following removal of some beams stored in the cruck barn a load of "nesting" materials was cleaned out from a small space revealing gnawing damage done by a glis glis. These critters are set to become a SEVERE HOUSEHOLD PEST in South Oxfordshire and beyond

Given that the nesting or hibernating space of this glis glis is only 1.5" high this appears to go some way to explaining why the glis glis finds 2" wide mortices (see above) an attractive spacious hibernaculum.

Good News !

Today a small darting and prancing figure was seen in the woodland near the timber piles and after a while the realisation dawned on us that this was a STOAT who has hopefully arrived to deal with the GG problem.
