To recommission the saw we re-sawed a heap of Douglas fir / European larch / Western Red Cedar slab wood that was left over from the cruck timber-framed barn building project.

This has generated quite a pile of good 1 ins thick square edged planks of varying widths (5" - 9" - ave 6").

Cedar boards.

Running a number of the 1/2" rough sawn western red cedar planks through a thicknesser (/ planer) has highlighted the grain and colour of the wood thereby producing a more valuable and hence useable product that can be employed in a number of different ways e.g. bee hive cladding.

Image

Douglas Fir, Larch & Spruce rough sawn planks run through the thicknesser has achieved remarkable planed all round (PAR) surface and edge finish and most importantly has brought out the colour and pattern of the grain to produce furniture stock grade planks.

Image

The thicknesser can easily handle finishing 4ft long resawn planks and up to 8ft long provided infeed and outfeed table bench roller support is provided to help obviate plank end "snipe".

The wood chips collected by the dust collection system are a valuable pet bedding and / or oil soak up commodity that can be sold to pet shops / garages.

Douglas Fir is thicknessed and planed more easily than :-

European Larch which can exude resin that sticks to the in and out feed rollers and very likely also to the cutter head.
