Herbert Russell P.G.Dip. is a timber-frame carpenter who is currently preparing a dissertation on how timbers other than oak were used in traditional timber framed building construction as part of the course work to obtain a Masters Degree in Timber Building Conservation from Bournemouth University.
The dissertation study also aims to examine the current mix and inventory of timbers that can be found growing today in Oxfordshire's woodlands. One of the important outcomes from this study will be a new found awareness amongst woodland owners, managers and building designers about how a more appropriate mix / balance of timbers could be employed in new timber-framed building design and construction. For example, we know that tree plantings of exotic conifers such as Douglas Fir, Larch and Cedar are now fairly widespread in Oxfordshire and so using these timbers in local building projects in addition to or instead of oak might potentially provide a more harmonious match between growers and users of timber thereby improving the sustainability of this building method.
