I'm very much a newbie to both this site and to the craft in general!

After having an oak framed garage built and erected I'm having a go at a (vaguely) matching garden shelter/pergola. Idea is to have a pitched roof (40deg) approx 4.8m long x 3.5-4m wide with one end covered (c2m long) wih oak weatherboard sides/gable + shingle roof with the rest open with the same roof structure rafters forming a pergola.

I've purchased the oak for the frame (6" x 6") and weatherboard but looking for shakes/shingles. I wondered if anyone knows sources + any advice for a virgin oak worker!

Any references to books/video's on framing/roofing would be appreciated

There is quite a bit of information on this forum about shingles. Enter "shingles" as a search term to see what has been previously discussed on the forum on that topic.

Why not make your own shingles ?

Given that you are based in South Oxfordshire you are very welcome to have a go at making shingles in our woodland using either western red cedar or european larch. One of our Oxfordshire Woodland group fellows (Andrew Jarvis) is keen to develop this activity to form part of his growing woodland craft based business.

The Group are keen to support aspiring woodland workers or those engaged in the downstream crafts and will provide funding to those persons for the purchase of tools, training, protective equipment and make the necessary introductions to woodland owners who are keen to see their woodlands being worked.
