There were demonstrations of rip sawing using a Garlick's whip saw and scaffold frame at the 2014 Bodgers Ball.

It is often thought that the underdog has a harder job than the topdog however the underdog's work on the pull stroke is gravity assisted whereas the topdog has to pull the saw upwards against gravity and depending on the length of the saw the posture adopted for part of this process can be quite un-natural but if done often enough would give rise to magnificent pectoral muscles.

This underdog is using a custom made turned wedged ash dolly.

The modern approach taken by the bodgers is very much like that illustrated and documented by André Roubo the historical French raconteur in his (1769-82) L’Art du Menuisier where he provides a good account of the practices and methods employed by "the sciers de long" to convert timbers.

This practice continued in France untill well into the 20th century.

Jeff Burks provides and excellent translation of Roubo's work on his Lost Art Press website.
