Sweet chestnut coppice stock can be used to produce split lath either for use to secure roof tiles & thatch with thinner splits going for use as ceiling lath.

Herbert Russell starting a split in a sweet chestnut lath.

Once the split is started the lath stock is moved to the "break" where the split is advanced and controlled using a froe.

10 years later the lath making process was demonstrated by Herbert Russell at The Weald & Downland Museum. The lath making process involves clamping a short length (4ft) of a sweet chestnut round log in the clamping brake in order to remove the bark.

Image

The log is then upended and halved progressively to produce cake slice stock.

Image

The inside heartwood strip is removed following which the resultant thick strip is then cleved and split using a froe in the brake.

Image

The strips produced are then flatened on the shave horse using a draw knife.

The apocalyptic scene below is of the woodland where the sweet chestnut grew last year.

Already the following spring new shoots are sprouting from the cut coppice stool.

An adjacent previous years sweet chestnut coup is already regenerating at an alarming speed.
