Axial floor joists are stronger than housed joists as they do not require the removal of wood to make joints. They are easily fitted and removed as per old English building practice. This type of floor joist tends to be seen in earlier buildings (pre 1550).

No 1, School Lane (Sleepy Cottage), Turville, Buckinghamshire (as featured in the film "Goodnight Mr. Tom") exhibits this type of floor joists.

Goodnight Mr Tom's cottage must be one of the best known and much photographed timber-framed cottages in Bucks.

An external chimney was added onto older timber-framed buildings following the demise of the open hall e.g as per Mr Tom's cottage. This cottage is likely to date from the mid 15th to mid-16th century. Ovens were generally constructed as part of the chimney fireplace.

Mr Tom's cottage is called Sleepy cottage named after Ellen Sadler a young girl who fell asleep between 1873 - 80. Her mother made money by admitting people to the cottage to see this real life sleeping beauty.

Next to Mr Tom's cottage is Church cottage. This featured in Agatha Christie's "The 4.50 from Paddington" as the home of Miss Marple in fictional St. Mary Meade.

The interior of the cottage in the Geraldine McEwan version is seen to have axial floor joists.
