Ulrik Hjort Lassen published his doctoral thesis in June 2014 - The Invisible Tools of a Timber Framer: A survey of principles, situations and procedures for marking (out timbers) and this is available to download for free in four parts from The University of Gothenburg.
The thesis is also available (in English) as a paperback book from The University of Gothenburg, Gothenburg, Sweden :-
Studies in Conservation No. 32, 2014. [ISBN 978-91-7346-785-8,8]
¼in. x 10¼in., 238 pages, copiously illustrated. Softcover, 212SEK.
The thesis is available to download in four parts with the main thesis including appendix "A" being a 381mb download. There is also a copiously photo illustrated single case study published as appendix "B" comprising a whopping 1,061mb and frankly this is not really needed.
The dissertation attempts to draw together layout and marking methods as employed historically and as used current day in North America, Japan, Mainland Europe and England making good use of Sketchup to illustrate the marking and joining of irregular timbers.
A much simpler explanation of working and joining together irregular timbers (scribe rule) can be obtained in a simple 10 page article "The Journeyman" first published in the Architects Journal in 1992 by Paul Russell with a few additional photos and illustrations added later by me.
