Starting Monday 9 July

The North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is to deliver a series of workshops promoting sustainable woodland management.

The first, looking at Woodland Management for Biodiversity will be on Monday 9th July at the Calcot Centre, Reading. The workshops are suitable for woodland owners and managers, private forestry contractors and employees, land agents, game managers, conservation professionals and community groups currently managing woodlands. Woodland biodiversity is a valued component of sustainable forests, providing interest and delight for visitors. Getting its management right is essential for the health of woodland ecosystems and economic viability.

23,300 hectares or just over 13% of the North Wessex Downs AONB is wooded. Over a third of this is ancient in origin and over 45% has either a national or local designation for its particular wildlife value. Perhaps most significantly, our research has identified that only 44% of this woodland is under active management.

Delivered by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and using recognised experts from a range of backgrounds, topics will include:

• Principles of woodland management

• Integrating game and wildlife management

• Threats and risks of management activities

• Sources of advice and grant funding

Further workshops will focus on economic issues and managing for cultural and historical significance.

For further information or to book a place please call Amanda Ingham of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust on 01256 381186 or email amandai@hwt.org.uk by Wednesday 4th July.

Hi,

A good 60 persons attended this event and personally I found this to be quite a useful and informative event - especially for woodland wildlife newbies.

The lecture sessions in the morning were a bit of an endurance test focussing in large part on woodland ride and margin profiling in an effort to encourage butterflies, invertibrates and wildlife.

There were a good number of freebee publications on offer from the Forestry Commission, Butterfly Conservation, Sparsholt College, etc., however I found The North Wessex Downs Management Plan 2009 - 2014 to be simply outstanding in it's syle, composition and presentation. This plan contains a brief synopsis on the state of the NWD woodlands and it spells out quite clearly the significant issues that need to be faced if we are to avoid a wholesale reduction in the health, wellbeing and biodiversity of these woodlands.

The afternoon visit to BBOWT's Moor Copse nature reserve (just north of the M4 moterway enroute from Englefield to Tidmarsh) was excellent and very informative. The BBOWT staff were very patient and never failed to provide an informed answer to some very awkward questions.

The NWD officers conducted a post session survey of attendees in part to determine whether there was sufficient general interest in forming a NWT Woodland forum though no explanation was provided as to how this would be achieved (e.g. meetings, web Forum, events, etc.).

It would be easy to loose sight of the fact that The North Wessex Downs are formed in large part by The Vale and South Oxfordshire and so Oxfordshire Woodland Group members should find the next NWD event - "The Economics of Woodland Management" to be of interest. This will take place on 10th October 2012 and further details can be obtained from Amada Ingham on 01256 381186 or email amanda@hwt.org.uk

Thank you for your interest in the North Wessex Downs Woodland Management Workshops. Please find below information on the next workshops in the series.

Get your woodland working for you!
Maximising the economic benefits of woodland

Using recognised experts from a range of backgrounds the workshops will help provide delegates with the confidence to make and implement the right management decisions for their particular woodlands.

Woodland is a valuable habitat for wildlife as well as a source of timber, fuel and products. Added value can also come in the form of social forestry enterprises, recreation and education. However, research shows that only 44% of woodland in the AONB is under active management. This workshop looks at maximising the economic benefits in woodland in order promote long term economically and environmentally sustainable management.

In order to cover the most relevant material for various audiences the topic will be covered in two workshops;
· Wednesday 10th October is particularly suitable for those involved in the management of larger or more commercial woodlands
· Thursday 11th October is suited to those managing smaller or more community led woodlands.

This workshop is part of a series of workshops North Wessex Downs AONB has contracted the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust to deliver in order to promote environmentally and economically sustainable woodland management.

We are keen to involve as many woodland owners and managers from across the AONB as possible so please highlight this event to relevant contacts, woodland owners and contractors.

The event brochure & booking form can be found here :-

Hi,

David Rees [Oxfordshire Woodland project manager] and I attended the second set of North Wessex Downs woodland management courses held in Faccombe, North Hants and came away much impressed by both the turnout and the quality of the both the classroom and field sessions provided.

I was very pleased to see a wide range of age groups present at these sessions and especially since this afforded the opportunity to learn directly from the younger "professional" contingent who appear to be remarkably well informed on woodland, land and nature management issues.

I particularly enjoyed the visit to a small oak / hazel woodland where the owner showed us how to identify hazel nuts that have been opened by dormice in contrast to those opened by mice and squirrels. I took a sample nut away with me and will now check in our own woodland to see if I kind find any similar evidence confirming the presence of these little furry critters.

Wessex Woodland management provided an excellent insight into how commercial felling decisions and timing of same are made based on species, market demand, planting and or natural regeneration opportunities.

An informative picture was painted by the Oakley Coppice group on how to engage and encourage local community groups to become active in the management and care of local authority owned woodlands where a win / win approach was taken to faciliate working the woodland through the sale of coppice products with the attendant gain in natural flora and fauna.

A usefull insight and advice was provided by several local private individuals who have come together to form a group that bought a small woodland now being managed by the various partners mainly on an educational and nature conservation basis.

Amanada is now already planning the next NW AONB woodland event which will be held at Froxfield near Marlborough on Thursday 22nd November when Dr Nicola Bannister will make presentations on woodland archaeology and other land features that need to be recognised and taken into account when developing woodland management plans.

Regards

Ken Hume - Executive Trustee - The Oxfordshire Woodland Group.

Thank you to Ken, I’m glad the workshops are useful. Please find below details for the next workshop.

Managing your woodland heritage
Identification and preservation of historic and cultural features in woodland
Thursday 22nd November 2012

Woodland is a valuable habitat for wildlife as well as a source of timber, fuel and products. Woodlands also provide a vital contribution to the natural and cultural heritage of the area but often very little is known about the archaeology and cultural history of the woods. This workshop will help you to identify these features and provide guidance and advice on measures that can be taken to protect these features when managing your woodland.
This workshop is part of a series of workshops North Wessex Downs AONB has contracted the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust to deliver in order to promote environmentally and economically sustainable woodland management.

Who should attend?
• Woodland owners/ managers
• Private forestry contractors and employees
• Land agents
• Game managers
• Community groups currently managing woodlands
• Conservation professionals

Using recognised experts this workshop will help provide delegates with the confidence to make and implement the right management decisions for their particular woodlands. With a site visit providing ample opportunity for demonstration and discussion.
Topics will include:
• Identification of a range of archaeological
and historic features in woodland.
• Highlighting potential risks of management
activities.
• Suggested management techniques,
mitigation and best practice.
• Overview of survey methods
• Cultural significance of trees and
woodlands

For further information or to book a place please contact Amanda Ingham on 01256 381186 or email amandai@hwt.org.uk by Wednesday 14th November

Persons who were unable to attend the North Wessex AONB series of workshops and forum will be pleased to note that pdf files for each of the presentations made can now be downloaded from :-

NWAONB Presentations

and the final report from the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust can be downloaded from :-

Hampshire & IOW Wildlife Trust Report

Please note that the south side of Oxfordshire (Lockinge / Ardington) lies within the NW AONB and thus outcomes generated by the H&IOWWT series of workshops will have a relevance to the future management of this area and in particular the adoption of a "Ward Forester" approach to coordinating the activities of small woodland owners in order to overcome issues of economies of scale and woodland management plan generation.
