Post Making a pole lathe

We have now finished making the main components for our pole lathe using recycled dry timber offcuts that have been held in stock for woodworking projects.

The components have been sized and planed using the thicknesser / planer generously funded in 2025 by South Oxfordshire District Council.

Assembly of the parts will be followed by fitting the lathe headstocks.

Because the pole lathe will initially be housed in our cruck barn we have chosen to fit a bungee band gantry directly above the bed of the pole lathe which will obviate the need to use a traditional long ash pole, however when the pole lathe is used outside :-

or within an open walled bodgers shed then an external pole can still be employed to power the lathe.

The pole lathe has now been trial assembled upstairs in the cruck barn. Some adjustments need to be made to the dry oak head and tailstocks to help improve free sliding of same.

A battery powered lighting system positioned and fixed above the pole lathe bed (on the gantry ?) will help to improve work piece visibility, cutting and measurement accuracy.
