OWG has been awarded a "Shoulder to Shoulder" grant by Mens Sheds and DRINKIQ to produce a work bench for community use in our cruck barn.

OWG Fellow Cora Firth has produced a design and timber list that has been used to resaw seasoned European Larch to make the bench.

The resawn timber is being processed through the thicknesser planer to ease measuring and mark up of joints together with improving aesthetics by highlighting the woodgrain.

The workbench components are now in Cora's workshop where she is making a solid workbench for use by the bodgers in the cruck barn.

Overall dimensions are variable depending on the height of the intended users and typical work being done. Final height will be adjusted on site.

We have now added the work bench to the range of green woodworking tools, devices and furniture forming part of the Cora Firth Greenwood Product Range available from The Oxfordshire Woodland Group.

The bench top and cross frames have now been partially completed and stood up in mock assembly format sufficient to obtain an over view of the finished outline of the bench.

The workbench parts were moved from Cora's workshop to the bodgers shop where the bench was assembled and part bolted. The worktop was then clamped to the cross ties to test the longitudinal stability of the bench. Rock solid !

Image

The worktop & lower shelf will now be drilled & bolted to the cross ties which will provide the permanent longitudinal and racking stability.

Image

The underside fit of the worktop to the cross ties was checked to ensure that the joints on the multi plank worktop would not be subject to bending stresses that might result in damage and separation of the glued joints.

The fascia boards were selected and run through the thicknesser to produced a nice planed finish followed by profiling the ends to remove sharp corners before fitting to the work bench.
