Hazel rods and poles should be cut back close to the stool and ideally with the cut faces sloping outwards to shed water. This stool should generate about £60 and is cut on a 4 year cycle. It is surrounded by primroses which if not trampled should provide some spring delight !

Already the primroses around the base of the hazel stool are responding to the increased light levels and are putting on leaf with a good number of small seedlings also evident.

3 months later and the primroses and celandine are flowering in the spring sunshine around the cut hazel stool. The first day of spring !

3 years later the hazel has regrown and the primroses have spread to cover a wider area.

This area has been mowed once a year (Aug) with a rotary mower which helps scatter and spread the primrose seed.
