After removal of the overlying forest duff down to mineral soil level the new cruck barn site was excavated to produce a level area greater than the size of the finished barn footprint.

This area was then covered with a permeable membrane to prevent mixing or displacement of the soil and the germination of weeds. Pallets were laid out upside down on top of the membrane and creosote applied to the underside bearers to help prevent rot before being flipped over and laid in position on the membrane ready to accept the plywood floor sheets. The membrane has blue lines woven into the fabric effectively creating the equivalent of a large sheet of graph paper and this proved to be useful in laying out and positioning of pallets.

3/4" thick plywood sheets were then laid out and fixed to the top of the pallets to form a temporary level framing floor upon which the cruck timber-frame will be laid out and lofted. The edges of all plywood sheets were positioned over pallets to ensure that they could be properly fixed and thereby transmit applied loads to the ground

Following completion of all hewing, excavation & levelling of the site and laying of the framing floor the way is now clear to commence timber-framing week commencing 15 August 2016.

The Oxfordshire Woodland Group welcomes volunteers or aspiring timber-framers to attend and assist in this process. Interested persons should contact The Group by email (below).
