The Oxfordshire Woodland Group are delighted to report that Sovereign Housing has approved the award of a grant to The Oxfordshire Woodland Group to assist the group with the purchase of chainsaws & associated equipment together with personal protective equipment and training to support our hedge laying skills training programme as part of our Forest Wellbeing and Countryside Skills project.

The award was made through The Oxford Community Foundation with the support of Woodland Heritage.

Persons wishing to get involved in hedge laying work in South Oxfordshire should get in touch with the Executive Trustee in the first instance to join in our work in the great outdoors where you can get some excercise, develop countryside skills and in so doing help improve the visual amenity of the countryside. This is a great way to help lift those winter blues.

During January 2016 the Sovereign grant received by the Oxfordshire Woodland Group was used to purchase a new chainsaw and associated equipment together with personal protective equipment.

Image

The chainsaw was commissioned by Oxfordshire Woodland Group Fellow and Sparsholt College student Jeremy Hunter. Please note that Jeremy is wearing chainsaw trousers, boots, gloves, helmet, ear defenders and gloves recommended for this type of work.

The chainsaw was used to clear old pole sized stems littering an area of woodland that will be used to demonstrate horse logging at the end of March 2016. This demonstration will be given by Mark Cottrell and his horses.

Rotten poles, brash & branch material were stacked to clear the way for the horse to run unimpeded by snag material through the wood from collection point to the receiving area where logs will be stacked for processing.
