I recently made some investigations to determine whether using the traditional approach of horse logging to fell and extract small amounts of timber from our woodland might still be appropriate.

Richard Eames is based near Marlborough and hopes to make a visit to South Oxfordshire in the not too distant future to examine and discuss his experience and capability in this respect.

OWG members wanting to learn more about this approach to woodland management should add their names or express interest here or alternatively PM me to be kept advised about proposed visit dates.

Matt and Claudia Waller of Hawthorn Heavy Horses based near Chelmsford, Essex use two Suffolk Punch horses as the motive power needed to extract logs from close grown or sensitive sites.

This methoid helps avoid deep rutting caused by heavy machinery.

Heavier logs call for the use of a logging arch

The Wallers have produced an excellent screen show of their horses Lygh Holly and Easton Roy at work.

I met green woodworker & besom broom maker Mark Cottrell at his Chilterns yard near Checkendon where he also keeps pigs and horses and was pleased to discover that he is also available to assist woodland owners with horse logging work especially in The Chilterns part of South Oxfordshire.

I have been invited to watch Mark and his horses at work and will shortly post some pictures of same.

I note that the December 2014 SWOG newsletter contains a two page article on horse logging in Kent
