Post Making ash splint baskets

One of the weakneses of ash is well known in that when subject to radial impact that this can cause crushing of the earlywood cells and separation of the annual ring layers. We previously identified this characteristic weakness in the use of ash for making Morris dancing poles. On the other hand this weakness can be turned into a strength by deliberately causing separation of the annual rings to produce thin strips of ash each of which is one annual ring thick. This material is quite flexible and so can be woven to form a light lattice which with the addition of basket making skills can be used to produce an environmentally friendly shopping basket.

I was inspired recently when viewing Peter Follansbee's blog to have a go and see how easy or difficult that it might be to separate wood annual rings and so did nothing more complicated than reach into the firewood kindling pile and pulled out some tight, clear, straight grained larch and then used a pen knife to half, quarter, eighth, etc each stick to produce thin strips of larch that are quite easy to weave together to form a lattice.
