Post Thatching Spar Making

The annual Woodcote Steam Rally, South Oxfordshire provides an excellent venue for craftspeople to exhibit their wares and services to the public.

OWG fellow Andrew Jarvis exhibited his thatching spar making services.

He will demonstrate the ancient craft of converting hazel rods into spars & liggers for the thatching craft.

Andrew's sign was hand made by James Findley Signs.

The 28" long hazel rods are first split in half at one end using a small adze to make a heart cut and then lever the ends apart the end of the rod so that this can then be pushed over and around a vertical hazel post that effectively splits the spar in half.

This process is then repeated to quarter the hazel spar.

The quartered spars then have their ends sharpened to a point and any rough bits shaved from the sides using a blade that has been fixed to a seat. This is a quicker and safer method than using a free billhook.
