More normally found as a wet meadow plant it is not entirely unusual to find snake's head frittilarias growing on woodland margins especially where from time to time rides or verges are mown in mid summer with a rotary type mower which helps broadcast the seeds from the pods that form at the top of the long stalks.

These are found both in white and speckled mauve coloured versions.
