John Steane and James Ayres recently (Nov 2013) authored Traditional Buildings in the Oxford Region (1300-1840) published by Oxbow Books.

This book provides an insight into typical traditional vernacular materials used to construct local Oxfordshire and Olde Berkshire (south Oxon) buildings including the selection and use of timber, cob, thatch, stone, etc.

John and James provide building examples ranging from humble thatched cob cottages to stone built manor houses with this information gathered over both of their respective career lifetimes.
