Provided no more than 5 cubic metres are felled per calender quarter for a woodland owner's own personal use then a Forestry Commission felling licence is not required.

A woodland owner can elect to sell 2 cubic metres per quarter without needing to obtain a felling licence.

It can be advantageous to an owner to plan to fell at the end of any calender quarter and at the beginning of the following quarter to effectively double the allowance to 10 cubic metres (per half year).

To put this allowance into perspective the OWG cruck timber frame building will require approximately 6.3 cubic metres [225 cu ft] of converted timber to make the frame which combined with conversion wastage allowance would most likely not exceed the 10 cubic metre cutting allowance illustrated in the above picture.
