Sat 29th June 2013
The cruck frames were raised on Sat 29th June 2013 by stint of hand, rope & pulley.
The crucks and other frames were to rest on simple limestone block foundations.
The crucks were laid out facing each other and then a temporary lifting frame was positioned between the cruck frames to hoist the crucks into position using ropes and pulleys attached to the top of the lifting frame.
The first cruck was then was raised using the lifting frame gin.
The gin was then moved to lift the second cruck.
By end of day the frame was standing complete up to wall plate level.
Sunday 29th June 2013
The upper framework, purlins, windbraces, rafters & sprockets were raised and fixed.
The impressive cruck interior demonstrates how a traditional Oxfordshire cruck frame might have appeared to its first medieval occupants.
Tradition requires that the complete building is topped out with a ridge tree - a sprig of oak taken from a nearbye tree.
The cruck building can be seen any day at Harcourt Arboretum, Nuneham Courtney, Oxfordshire.
Please drop bye to see this inspiring building project.
The shingled roof will be fixed during the first 2 weeks of August by Brian Williamson & Ruth Goodfellow.
