OWG Fellow Joe Currie took down a 33 year old x 90ft high cottonwood tree.

This had to be dismantled rather than felled.

Nerves of steel together with physical fitness , chainsaw skills and rigging compentence are required.

The cottonwood was observed to have very dry sapwood and quite wet heartwood which is contrary that experienced with most UK trees.

This is a cold weather North Americian tree where the tree needs to protect itself against extreme low temperatures over prolonged periods of time and so maybe this strategy is quite logical for cottonwood to employ even in the relativey mild UK climate.

A section of the cottonwood tree was cleaved in half,

then quartered

and finally split into eights revealing straight grained wood with a high sapwood to heartwood ratio.

The timber has a high water content and is relatively soft and easy to split with an axe.
