The Oxfordshire Woodland Group decided that it would be appropriate to reward the volunteers engaged on building the woodland cruck framed barn by purchasing a Kelly Kettle for them to make hot drinks in the woodland or heat up soups or even fry the odd rasher of bacon - a woodland cooking delicacy as practiced in the past by the Chiltern Bodgers.

The Kelly Kettle requires nothing more that some paper and dry kindling to heat sufficient water to make a brew (1.6litre).

The fire can be lit through the air hole in the base and following this smoke appears from the chimney top.

Image

Once burning cleanly no smoke will be seen but a glow from the fire burning within is quite visible.

Once the water has boiled the kettle can be removed from the base revealing some smouldering sticks and ash.

By autumn 2022 electrical energy costs had increased dramatically and so it was decided that it was time to break out the Kelly kettle which can boil water in short order using either dry pine cones, twigs and timber sawmill offcut kindling (see lying behind kettle).

It's worth boiling several kettles and then saving the hot water in Thermos flasks for all day use and most importantly at zero cost. Save ££££+.
