A visit to Westhide Estate in Herefordshire illustrated how woodland improvement thinnings of relatively little timber value could be chipped in the woodland and then used as wood fuel to fire a wood chip boiler.

The wood chip arrives in the storage shed as wet chip.

This is then spread uniformly in a thin layer over a perforated floor where some of the heat generated by the fuel chip boiler is fed back to heat and dry the wet wood chip.

Once dry the chip is stacked ready for moving to the fuel bunker.

Moving the chip requires a fairly expensive front end loader.

The dry chip is loaded into the boiler feed hoppers.

Producing heat using wood chip on this scale requires a significant local local district heat demand e.g. serving a local community or estate office and houses.
