I saw some nice straight tall sweet chestnut stems on a woodland hanger site in South Oxfordshire and thought that this demonstrated quite nicely how some coppiced trees can in the fullness of time revert to becoming high forest trees.

Sweet chestnut is prone to developing heart rot and so the dead branch seen on one of the stems should have been removed some time ago as these tend to become the point where rot pathogens enter.
