A new book by Dr's. Nat Alcock and Dan Miles - "The Medieval Peasant House in Midland England" [ISBN 978-1-84217-506-4] was published towards the end of 2013. This book features mainly cruck timber-framed buildings many of which are in Oxfordshire / Buckinghamshire / Warwickshire. The book comes complete with a CDROM containing full recording details for each of the 145 buildings surveyed in Adobe Acrobat format.

Dr. Dan Miles specialises in applying the technique of dendrochronology (tree ring dating) to each of the surveyed buildings to help provide more precise details on both the timbers species and techniques employed to convert trees into building components.

Dr. Nat Alcock compiled and published "Cruck Construction" in 1981 which is a catalogue of around 3000+ cruck timber-framed buildings that can be found in England, Scotland, Ireland & Wales.

This is probably the most comprehensive book on cruck timber-framing written to date.

The book is available from Oxbow Books min Oxford or by mail order via their website.

Regards

Ken Hume
