I tried to change my password and the new one was rejected for being too short - it has 9 characters. Any thoughts?

Good to see you. Don't know why you password was bounced, as far as I can see all it stipulates is that it must be at least seven letters long. If the man doesn't get back to you, I'll pass your concerns along ( he should be on later).

On an unrelated topic. Post on as may things as you can, come up with new topics to post on, it will take a while to get a real conversation going, but we need volume and persistence to get people to keep coming back.

Hi Thomas,

It would appear that one needs to make up a passowrd that contains both upper and lower case letters and numbers. Since no money is changing hands here it probably isn't necessary to have such high levels of password security.

Since access to the site at admin level lets you alter everything on the site. we need as much security password wise as we can to prevent the site being hijacked/ defaced/ jus generally mucked about with.

Strong passwords these days in my experience as a systems administrator are very important!
Hackers can not only gain access and thus control of websites, but the underlying systems, i.e. the server ultimately.
I do all I can to mitigate these things (including running suEXEC) but a strong password is a small thing given the over all protection it gives.
Unfortunately peoples attitudes to passwords is that if it's too long and not easy to remember they don't like it, but that's not a good reason to have poor passwords... all just my opinion of course! 😉

My password contains upper and lower case and numbers and is long enough. But I cannot get it accepted. It really is an obscure one and unless I was tortured I would never reveal it. I am concerned that others may be put off joining the forum if they cannot use their normal password or at least one they can remember easily.

Thomas, I am a little confused as to what the problem is that you face exactly.
Clearly you have a password that works or you couldn't post to the forum, so is it that you are trying to change your password?
If so, I am still a little baffled as I changed it for you recently and had no problems at all.
Please can you e-mail me with the details of the problem you face, thanks.

Hello,
Just trying to join and I have the same problem. My new password is 10 characters long, meets all of your criteria and your system considers it "strong". However I keep getting an error message "password is too short".

I think I will give up now because I simply won't be able to remember your initial password.

This is a shame because I would have liked to contribute to your forum as DR has been very helpful to me in the past.

@cuckoospit (et al) I have removed forced password security as too many people don't seem to be able to manage a non dictionary password.

I am reluctant to do this as it makes the system vulnerable to attack (websites are often hacked daily these days, this one included, I get the system reports alerting me!), but it seems if I don't we may not have any users on the system!

You may now use what ever password you wish, but PLEASE, try and make it a non dictionary password including upper and lower case with symbols of at least 8 characters, thanks.

I use an encrypted file (created by the best encryption software available, that is also free! TrueCrypt) that I have one very strong but (for me) memorable password, plus my computer is encrypted too, so I can simply refer to the stored (and encrypted) password file and/or let the browser remember my login details as the system is encrypted too. I recommend others do this too.

I can assure you that my password conformed entirely to your definition of a "non-dictionary" password. It was also 10 characters long, yet it was still rejected. Thankyou for reducing your security level, but I am somewhat offended at your tone. Please remove my account from your website as soon as you are able.
